World Number One Tennis Player Aryna Sabalenka Criticizes WTA for Disappointing Experience at Finals in Cancun

World number one Aryna Sabalenka harshly criticized the women’s tennis organization WTA on the sidelines of the WTA finals in Cancun/Mexico. “I have to say that I am very disappointed with the WTA and my experience so far at the finals,” wrote the 25-year-old on Instagram.

“As a player, I feel like the WTA doesn’t respect me. I think most players feel the same way,” Sabalenka said. “To be honest, I don’t feel confident about playing on this pitch for a long time.”

The reason for Sabalenka’s criticism is the late construction of the sports facility in Cancun and the associated restrictions. Among other things, the players were not allowed to train on the pitch before the start of the tournament. “That’s not acceptable to me when there’s so much at stake,” said Sabalenka, who defeated Greece’s Maria Sakkari 6-0, 6-1 at the start on Sunday.

Cancun was only officially chosen on September 7th as the venue for the season-ending tournament for the best eight players of the year. The WTA had previously considered holding the event in Saudi Arabia.
