Wolf to be Killed in Canton of Neuchâtel After Recent Sheep Attacks

The wolf will be killed in the canton of Neuchâtel after a new attack. The animal attacked ten sheep between October 4 and 5 in the Mont-Racine region, in the commune of Val-de-Ruz. He killed nine and injured a tenth. The attacks on this herd occurred despite the presence of an electrified barrier set up by the breeder. The Canton has decided to authorize the shooting of this isolated wolf for a period of sixty days. This is the first authorization issued in the canton as the species continues to progress in the Jura Arc.

It is the wildlife wardens who are responsible for carrying out the sentence. A shooting perimeter has been defined around Mont-Racine. If the animal has not been slaughtered within 60 days, the authorization expires. If new damage occurs in the region, the State can issue a new one.

Cantons may authorize the shooting of wolves that cause significant damage provided that reasonable protective measures have been taken beforehand. Which was the case during the last attack. In a press release, the state indicates that “the measures implemented by the breeder were of high quality and complied with federal guidelines. »

Of the nine animals killed, only one was consumed, and only partially. Typical wolf attack behavior, according to the head of the Wildlife, Forests and Nature Service.

The wolf multiplies its attacks

Numerous wolf attacks on livestock have been reported in recent weeks in the northern part of the Jura. In Neuchâtel territory, the wolf recently killed a calf in Chaumont and five sheep a few days later in Brot-Plamboz. Observations of isolated individuals have also been documented in the municipalities of Boudry and Val-de-Travers.

With fifteen victims in the space of two weeks, the wolf made an arrival in the canton of Neuchâtel which surprised even the Wildlife, Forests and Nature Service. For Christophe Noël, the leader of the SFFN, this bloody incursion is difficult to explain. These may be young born in the five packs observed south of the Jura and which are looking for new territories.

Following these attacks, the canton implemented federal provisions regarding wolf management, particularly the issue of shooting. To improve the protection of herds, the State is in the process of defining the conditions to prevent damage to livestock on its territory. He is also in the process of establishing a diagnosis of the vulnerability of the herds. /comm-sma-cwi
