Robin van Persie has not yet been approached to become assistant to head coach Arne Slot at Feyenoord. The club is looking for a successor for Marino Pusic, who yesterday became head coach at Ukrainian Shakhtar Donetsk. Van Persie’s name is mentioned frequently.

“I see myself as a head coach, I’m sure about that,” Van Persie says when asked. “I am also loyal. I am now working on my own staff (at Feyenoord under 19), which is also largely composed by me. So a move to the first team is not an obvious choice.”

So if Van Persie is approached, should he really think about it? “Of course.”

As coach of Feyenoord’s under-19s, Van Persie lost his flawless status in the Youth League this afternoon against Lazio. At sports park 1908 next to De Kuip the score was 2-2.

Feyenoord’s youth team, including Slovakian top talent Leo Sauer, previously defeated Celtic (3-0) and Atlético Madrid (2-1). Van Persie is very attached to his team.

“It is very special for an under-18 or under-19 team to have eight or nine permanent staff members. I think that is very strong of Feyenoord. And that is worth a lot to me. What does that mean for them if I would take the step to the first team?”
