Werder Bremen Fined 91,000 Euros by DFB for Fan Misconduct in DFB Cup Exit

Werder Bremen was fined 91,000 euros by the DFB sports court on Monday. Mistakes by their own fans during the surprisingly early exit from the cup cost the Bundesliga clubs dearly.

They had imagined the start of the 2023/24 competitive season at Werder Bremen to be completely different. The 2:3 at third division team Viktoria Köln, which was followed by league defeats against champions Bayern Munich (0:4) and SC Freiburg (0:1), was a first setback and immediately meant a surprisingly early exit from the DFB Cup.

And the first round exit, which cost Bremen additional income from the most important national cup competition, is also costly for the Bundesliga club in retrospect. As the DFB announced on Monday afternoon, Bremen were “fined a fine of 91,000 euros in a single-judge trial after charges were brought by the DFB control committee for two cases of unsportsmanlike behavior by their supporters.”

The club can spend 30,000 euros of this on security or violence prevention measures, but it would have to prove this to the DFB by March 31, 2024. As the association lists in detail, four fireworks batteries, 16 Bengal fires, six smoke pots and six indicators were ignited before and during the game in the Höhenberg sports park, which was sold out with 8,343 spectators, on the Bremen side. In addition, Werder supporters threw three flagpoles into the interior in injury time.

The DFB did not announce on its website whether Werder Bremen had accepted the penalty and whether it was therefore legally binding. Union Berlin (6,000 euros) and FC Bayern (1,000 euros) received significantly lower penalties on Monday; both had already agreed to these, which means they are considered legally binding.
