Wayne Rooney becomes the new manager of Birmingham City. The 37-year-old former English international signs a 3.5-year contract with the club that plays in the Championship, the second level behind the Premier League.

Rooney has not been without a club for long, after leaving American club DC United last Sunday. He had failed to qualify for the play-offs with the Washington club, where he had started last summer.

“It’s time to stop,” Rooney said of his departure from America. “I have done everything I can to reach the play-offs with this club.” The former striker also announced at the same time that he would return to his wife and children in England.

Replacement for fired Eustace

The 120-time international replaces John Eustace at Birmingham, who was fired on Monday. Birmingham are sixth in the Championship, twelve points behind leaders Leicester City.

Rooney says he will not shy away from the challenge facing Birmingham. “I can’t wait to get started. I have a clear way I want the team to play. My coaching staff and I will work hard to implement that.”

He will be supported by his former England team-mate Ashley Cole and former United team-mate John O’Shea, both of whom will also retain their roles as assistant coaches with the England Under-21s and Ireland national team respectively.

Rooney was previously a trainer at Derby County.
