VIDEO. Former Chelsea players reminisce about “always angry” Kevin De Bruyne: “He once had a serious argument with Eto’o”

Two ex-teammates of Kevin De Bruyne have revisited his period at Chelsea in a podcast. Ex-captain John Terry and John Obi Mikel did not believe that the Red Devil would ever have such a top career.

Chelsea paid 8 million euros for De Bruyne in the winter of 2012. Six months later he effectively joined the Blues. But it never became a success in London. After a loan to Werder Bremen, the English sold the midfielder to Wolfsburg for 22 million. Eighteen months later, Manchester City forked out 76 million and the rest is history.

“I absolutely never expected that they (De Bruyne and Mo Salah, ed.) would achieve what they have achieved so far,” club icon John Terry is honest. “This is perhaps my only disappointment as captain. I was probably a bit too strict then. Such players then needed an arm around their shoulders and a conversation. So now I wonder if I could have done more.”

Obi Mikel agrees. “I think you will agree with me: Kevin De Bruyne was not the best trainer,” said the Nigerian. “Not then. He came to training, probably because he wasn’t playing much at the time, with his head down and always angry. He looked like a child who came to the playground when no one wanted to play with him. I still remember Samuel Eto’o once lecturing him. Those two had a big fight on the training pitch, simply because he didn’t put in the effort Eto’o expected.”

But now both De Bruyne and Salah are shining for Chelsea’s rivals. “So we didn’t have high expectations for them. They left and they did what they had to do, they became superstars. When I see De Bruyne playing today, I think: Is this really the same guy?”
