Victor Wembanyama and Marine Johannès: French Basketball’s Rising Stars

Victor Wembanyama and Marine Johannès have been the most prominent French people in recent weeks. Before his friendly match with the Spurs against the Miami Heat, “Wemby” arrived with Johannès’ jersey.

Whether for men or women, French basketball has great talents in its ranks. At just 19 years old, Victor Wembanyama is the NBA’s newest attraction and the idol of the San Antonio Spurs. For her part, Marine Johannès plays in the WNBA with the New York Liberty.

Appreciated by the French public, they both have mutual respect. Before playing his second friendly match against the Miami Heat, Wembanyama arrived in the room with Johannès’ jersey. A nice gesture that responds to that of the player who on October 8, before the first game of the WNBA finals against the Las Vegas Aces, arrived wearing the “Wemby” jersey.

If having worn Johannès’ jersey seems to have brought luck to Wembanyama, author of a great performance with 23 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 blocks in less than 23 minutes, the New York player is less lucky. His team is close to losing the final against the Nevada franchise which leads 2-0.

Wembanyama rewarded

Now known to the general public thanks to a last good season with the Metropolitans 92 where he was vice champion of France, “Wemby” received an award on Friday. The French Basketball Federation announced that the neo-Spurs had won the 2023 Alain Gilles trophy which rewards the best French basketball player of the year.

Johannès still had the pleasure of being voted basketball player of the year by the public. With 57% of the votes, the Frenchwoman is well ahead of Wembanyama who has 10%. But the public counts for only one vote, while the jury is made up of 17 voters.
