Victor Tavares Wins Individual Competition at Brazilian Paralympic Badminton Championship

The Paraná native Victor TavaresBrazil’s only representative in badminton at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games, won the individual competition in the SH6 (short stature) class at the Brazilian Championship of the sport, held at the Paralympic Training Center, in São Paulo, from October 17th to 20th.

The 8th Brazilian Paralympic Badminton Championship and the III “Diego Mota” Under-23 Brazilian Championship, played simultaneously in the CT, featured 133 athletes, 41 women and 92 men, representing 41 clubs from 14 states and the Federal District.

Vitor competed in the tournament with four other competitors in his class. Everyone played against everyone and the Paraná native became undefeated champion, without losing a single game. Vitor’s last match was played on the morning of this Friday, 20th. He beat Dheyvid Bispo De Almeida 2-0 (21/7 and 21/2).

Before, he also defeated athletes Vinicius De Oliveira Costa (21/5 and 21/6), Marcio Dellafina (21/4 and 21/3) and Rennê Leite Carmo De Souza (21/1 and 21/4).

Vitor, fourth placed at the Tokyo Games, was already coming off a recent title in the singles bracket at the Australia Internationalat the beginning of October.

He is one of 31 summoned of badminton to represent Brazil at the Parapan American Games in Santiago, Chile, from November 17th to 26th. Twenty-nine of those called up for the Chilean competition participate in the competition at the Paralympic CT, including Vitor.

“I’m feeling really good, in one of my best shapes physically, mentally, tactically and technically. The good results indicate that I can do very well at the next Paralympic Games, in Paris, next year. Parapan will be a very important stage to be well until then. It’s a complicated competition, in which I must face the American Miles Krajewski, who is my partner in international competitions. I will do my best to win in Chile,” he said.

The Paraná native also celebrated the growth of the sport in Brazil. “It’s a passionate sport that has been enjoying a revival in the country. Being in a big national championship is always good. I can exchange ideas with young people who are starting out and serve as an inspiration to them so that more athletes can go far,” he said.
