Veolia Towers: Learning from Early Season Setbacks and Staying Patient

The rumble launch of the Veolia Towers. Of the first six competitive games, Hamburg’s basketball players only won the first two in the Cup, easyCredit Bundesliga and EuroCup. Afterwards, the completely reassembled team paid bitter lessons.

“It still hurts to lose,” says captain Seth Hinrichs (30) openly. “But we are close.” The experienced American is only one of three professionals who stayed after barely avoiding relegation. And he warns: “It’s about staying patient.”

As with the 79:90 in Munich, the towers were competitive at times in the EuroCup against London (94:100). “We managed three good quarters in which we played the way we want,” emphasizes Hinrichs. “It is still early in the season and we will learn from this experience. I liked the way we played and fought. We can take a lot of good things from this game.”

Coach Benka Barloschky (35) is starting a BBL season for the first time as boss. “He wants to play aggressively offensively and defensively,” says Hinrichs, describing his philosophy. “All five have to act as a unit. The boys all played in different systems last season, so there are a lot of old habits he’s working on. And you can see the improvement. I like the direction we’re moving in.”

Hinrichs (has been playing here since 2016) also needs patience on the way to getting his German passport. The father of the family passed the language and naturalization test. However, because he is seeking dual citizenship, the process is dragging on. Hinrichs: “I am a patient man. I can wait.”
