The US Ambassador to India, Eric Garcetti, once again makes it clear that his country is against the participation of Russian athletes in the 2024 Olympic Games.
The US Ambassador to India, Eric Garcetti, made it clear on the sidelines of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) session in Mumbai that his country remains against the participation of Russian athletes in the 2024 Olympic Games in order not to give them a platform for propaganda the meaning of Vladimir Putin.
“Russia is waging a war of aggression,” Garcetti told the FAZ and added: “We support Ukraine in defending its borders. Borders and sovereignty should mean something. We are very consistent: We try to keep politics out of sport – but barriers should be set for those who abuse sport for political purposes.”
Garcetti led Los Angeles’ successful bid for the 2028 Summer Olympics and has been his country’s ambassador to India since the spring. On Monday he supported the presentation of the Californian metropolis to the IOC members. On this occasion, organization leader Casey Wasserman declared his solidarity with Ukraine and Israel with reference to his ancestors, who as Jews had to flee what is now Ukraine.
