University of Illinois Memorial Stadium Catches Fire Ahead of Nebraska Game

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WOWT) – University of Illinois Memorial Stadium caught fire Tuesday, just days before Nebraska takes the field against the Fighting Illini on Friday.

Reports from NBC affiliate WAND in Champaign, Ill., say that fire crews were called to the stadium around 8 p.m. Tuesday.

About 20 minutes later, the fire was put out, according to a social media post from officials. No injuries were reported.

6 News contacted the Illinois Athletic Department about the fire. A university spokesperson said the fire occurred in the southwest corner of the stadium, away from spectator areas. There is optimism that Friday’s game will take place without issue.

“[The Illinois Division of Intercollegiate Athletics] will continue to evaluate the facility over the course of the next day, but early indications are positive that the stadium will be prepared to host the game, as scheduled and without interruption of seating or services, for the game on Friday.”

The Huskers (2-3) travel to Champaign for a road bout with Illinois (2-3) Friday night at 7 p.m.
