Unanswered Questions: The Origin of Chestnuts at the Rocca di Papa Festival

Our article yesterday sparked an avalanche of reactions and comments “Where do the chestnuts of the 2023 Rocca di Papa Festival come from?an article in which a simple and direct question was asked, anything but cryptic, about origin of the chestnuts which will be sold and cooked in the next few days in the streets of the picturesque Roccheggian village.

Among many comments and some stroke against our newspaper (nothing new, especially from certain people) two pieces of evidence have emerged: that the question was largely legitimate and that it prompted a sincere and participatory debate and, again, that at the moment there is still no answer to the question mail.

And to think that the article in question was widely commented and criticized, with sarcasm and in some cases vehemently, by many citizens: some considered the question inappropriate, unrealistic, almost “treasonable” (chestnut?), others they agreed with us on the need to know its origin – if not native – others made (very legitimate) irony.

In fact, to date neither we nor the citizens concerned have any answers on the topic and we frankly doubt that answers will be forthcoming.

It is worth highlighting that, as also reported in yesterday’s article, the question posed for the Rocca di Papa chestnut festival (a question that had also been posed in previous years, a sort of Roccheggian mantra) could also apply to the other festivals area in which products that are also typical of our areas are sold but in quantities apparently well above the capacity of local production.

We will remain in doubt because, above all, from the many comments received, no certainties emerge.
