Umana Reyer Venezia Breaks Deadlock in Eurocup with Victory over Youth Badalona

Venice, 24 October 2023 – After having achieved the fourth success in four championship matches by beating Nutribullet Treviso at home in the Veneto derby, Umana Reyer Venezia also managed to break the deadlock in the Eurocupdefeating the Youth Badalona con a clear 79-64. On this first continental seal of the orogranata there is the double signature of Marco Spisso – best scorer of the game with 24 points, 6 assists and a surgical 5/5 from beyond the three-point arc – and Amedeo Tessitori, who was the protagonist of an extremely solid performance in both halves of the court and brought home 16 points accompanied by 8 rebounds but also many precious plays that did not end up in the statistics sheet. The orogranata were protagonists of a match played with great tactical intelligence and extreme solidity: after attempting an initial attack in the second quarter and resisting Badalona’s recovery attempts in the third quarter, Reyer had the strength, in the final 10 minutes, to make the decisive push when Spissu and Tessitori finally took the lead; two real thorns in the side of the Joventut defense – which arrived at the Taliercio without the new signing Cherry (who arrived to replace the injured Feliz) and was left orphaned by Brodziansky during the current match -, for whom the quality performances of the former Olimpia Milano Deshaun Thomas (20 points) and the Dutch Yannik Kraag (12 points). The Spaniards, who ended the match with a terrible 1/14 in three-point shooting, significantly missed the contribution of experienced players such as Ante Tomic, overshadowed by the work in the paint of Tessitori, Pau Ribas and Andre Andrews, who he only showed flashes of his quality in the third quarter.

The news

Even though she had to deal with Wiltjer’s foul problems right from the start – already with four personal fouls during the first quarter – Reyer withstood the blow of a Badalona dragged by the muscular plays of Thomas and, thanks to Tessitori, Tucker and Spissu, managed to close the inaugural quarter with just two points behind (15-17). The first real change of pace for the lagoon players, however, is just around the corner and arrives in the second quarter: right in the early stages of the half, Badalona loses Brodziansky with a knee problem and Reyer sets the tone for overtaking with O’Connell. Joventut tries to resist, but Reyer raises the engine speed by placing an 11-0 fueled by the defense and baskets of Tucker, Brown jr. and Spissu: this brings us to +8 which Badalona tries to stem thanks to Ribas and Thomas (33-26 at 20′). Coming out of the changing rooms, Venezia tries to extend the lead again, reaching a double-digit lead for the first time with Tessitori’s free throws (38-28), but the guests are not willing and cling to the first flashes of the evening from Andrews who keeps the Iberians in contact. Former Sassari Onuaku does the rest and seals the 46-46 on the line. Tie broken by Tessitori’s profitable trip to the line, who gives his team a new +1 10 minutes from the end. Pure trust for the orogranata that in the fourth quarter they loosen the reins again and, driven by the Spissu-Tessitori tandem, they achieved their first cup success.
