From FC Bayern’s perspective, the past season was a real roller coaster ride. After mixed performances at the start of the season and the beginning of the year, the Munich team parted ways with coach Julian Nagelsmann in March and replaced him with Thomas Tuchel. This was followed by elimination from the DFB Cup and the Champions League.

At the last minute, FCB at least secured the German championship, but needed help from Mainz. Not least because of the disappointing performances in the season finale, many fans and experts lacked understanding of the coaching change.

However, there was no agreement within the club on this matter. Uli Hoeneß, honorary president and supervisory board member of the record champions, reported in the talk show “Sonntags-Stammtisch” on BR that Nagelsmann’s dismissal was “not necessarily wise”.

“I didn’t replace the coach”, he clearly emphasized that other people were responsible for the change in the coaching bench. It is clear in which direction Hoeneß was looking: he was thinking primarily of Oliver Kahn.

FC Bayern: Uli Hoeneß deals against Oliver Kahn

“The most important thing if you want to change something is to start with yourself and admit that you’ve made mistakes. And the appointment of Oliver Kahn as CEO was a big mistakethe Bayern maker followed up with clear words.

The former national goalkeeper has been a member of the Munich board of directors since January 2020, and in the summer of 2021 he moved up to the role of chairman of the board. With the last Bundesliga matchday of last season, Kahn finally had to retire.

This in turn can be traced back to Hoeneß. “When I realized that he couldn’t do that, I changed that together with Karl-Heinz Rummenigge”the 71-year-old looked back on the summer.

FC Bayern: Uli Hoeneß wants to retire soon

He himself probably didn’t necessarily plan for Hoeneß to intervene as actively in events as he has in the past few months. “At the moment we also have more operational tasks until we notice that the ship is sailing straight again,” he indicated that, like Rummenigge, he wanted to withdraw again in the foreseeable future.

He was also able to name a time frame: “I estimate that in the next six to twelve months we will have the staffing that the future should have.”

Hoeneß is probably thinking primarily of Max Eberl, who is being discussed as a sports director in Munich. The course for a commitment could be set at the upcoming supervisory board meeting in November.

When Bayern are optimally positioned to Hoeneß’s liking, he wants to retire to his role on the supervisory board. The only thing left to do is to advise. Time will tell whether the FCB maker will retire once and for all – or whether he will come back out of retirement for his FC Bayern.

The game that many Germany fans are waiting for is coming up in a few days: the premiere of the new national coach Julian Nagelsmann. On October 14th, the DFB team will play against the USA in Connecticut. With Nagelsmann, the 2024 European Championships should be a success in their own country. German fans and those from neighboring European countries in particular hope to be able to experience one or, ideally, several games live.
