Ugo Humbert reaches the quarter-finals in Basel

Ugo Humbert is going through an autumn full of sap. Already a quarter-finalist in Beijing, then at the Masters 1000 in Shanghai, the Frenchman reached the same stage of the competition at the ATP 500 in Basel. As in his first round, against Marcos Giron (where he had to dismiss a match point thanks to a winning forehand), the road was winding but, against Nicolas Jarry (20th), the 28th in the world knew how to perfectly manage the two turning points of the match. Two decisive games where the quality of his service partly tipped the scales.

Humbert had to put aside four break points in the seventh game of the first set, but he didn’t feel panicked. Five first balls (out of five) gave him a nice safety margin in the first tie-break. Rebelote, or almost, in the second act: having missed five break opportunities in his first three games back did not destabilize him. And he concludes without trembling from his first match point (7-6 [3]7-6 [4]). This is the second time this year that he has dominated the Chilean, after the Masters 1000 in Toronto in August.

He will face in the quarterfinals on Friday the winner of the match between Casper Ruud and Dominic Stricker.
