Udine Wins Friulian Derby with Impressive Performance

UDINE. Apu promoted, Ueb postponed. This is the verdict of the Friulian derby number 10 in history, won 90-80 by the Bianconeri at the end of a very good match. The updated ranking reiterates summer expectations: Udine is second and has top ambitions, Cividale remains in the play-off zone, just above the risk zone, and will aim to stay there until the end.

Long Udine

It was a completely different derby to the ones we witnessed in the play-offs in May, and a lot of this was due to the summer revolution of the Apu Old Wild West. Udine now has a very perimeter team and this is demonstrated by the fact that they continue to shoot with 40% three-point shooting.

On Sunday, Gesteco invited the Bianconeri to shoot a lot from beyond the arc (48 triples attempted, compared to 24 two-pointers) and seven responded “present”, making 19 triples for 57 points out of 90 total. A figure to which the 19 offensive rebounds captured contribute, given that it allowed Apu to shoot from the field 72 times, compared to 61 by their rivals. Another fundamental fact, which explains Udine’s superiority well, is the 29-17 under “points from the bench”.

To resolve the match in the second half, when things were getting complicated for Apu, were Monaldi and Ikangi, who found themselves fresh after being rested for a long time in the first half, when Vertemati gave ample time to Caroti and Alibegovic in the suffocating situation marking on Rota and Redivo. It is the chameleon team that the coach wanted in the summer, capable of changing structure during the race with the rotations of the men.

Cividale short

On the yellow-blue front we have to ask ourselves the reasons for a derby spent chasing for over 39 minutes out of 40. Pillastrini chose to clog up the area and concede the shot from outside to Apu, a gamble which was not rewarded, and the 19 offensive rebounds conceded to the home team had their impact.

Another statistic to think about is that of the distribution of points. In the Eagles they scored 57 points out of 80 in three: Redivo, Rota and Dell’Agnello, with the first two coming on too late. The team, in this first part of the season, seems to be too Redivo-dependent. Pillastrini had too little from his bench (17 points in five), and even less from the new arrivals (8).

The certainties of the splendid Gesteco last season have been undermined by a summer market that is struggling to bear fruit, especially in the external department. Maragon, Isotta, Bartoli and Mastellari have produced very little so far: a leap in quality is needed, otherwise in December, in a closer future than it seems, in addition to the second round, reflections related to the transfer market will also begin. With even two visas for non-EU citizens in his pocket, but the hope is that the new Gesteco will grow and it will not be necessary to spend them.
