Markéta Vondrousová and Aryna Sabalenka have strongly criticized the organization of the WTA Finals in Cancun, Mexico. The tennis players are not satisfied with the quality of the hard court at the prestigious end-of-year tournament.

“My first WTA Finals is not at all what I imagined,” 24-year-old Vondrousová wrote on Instagram. According to the Wimbledon winner, the ball does not bounce well on the court and the stadium is not ready to play top tennis.

Cancun was not officially designated as the event’s host city until September 7. The temporary stadium was constructed just before the tournament.

“We work hard all year to get to the Finals and in the end this is just a disappointment. We have the feeling that no one listens to us,” concludes the global number six.

Sabalenka: ‘This is unacceptable’

Sabalenka, the number one in the world, also feels badly treated by the organization. “I am very disappointed with the WTA and with my experience so far at the WTA Finals,” said the Belarusian.

“The courts do not feel good, the ball does not bounce in a normal way and we were only able to train on the court for the first time on Saturday. This is unacceptable in a tournament with so much at stake.”

“As a player, I feel like the WTA has no respect for me. To be honest, I don’t feel safe with the idea of playing on this court for a long time.”

The WTA Finals are currently in the group stage. The tournament with the best eight tennis players in the world continues until Sunday.
