The WTA Finals Cancun Faces Controversy Over Stadium and Court Conditions

The WTA Finals Cancun continues to cause controversy due to the stadium and court where the tournament is being held. Since Saturday, Aryna Sabalenka has complained about the WTA for not having the property ready in advance, a message she reiterated this Sunday and Monday.

“It is a lack of respect for the players on the part of the WTA, this is not the level I expect in the WTA Finals,” she commented after the victory against Maria Sakkari 6-0 and 6-1.

The Belarusian, current world number 1, used her social networks to continue expressing her disagreement with the women’s tour.

“I am happy that I was able to stay focused tonight, overcome these conditions and play well, despite this, I must say that I am disappointed with the WTA and the experience we have had with the WTA Finals,” Aryna wrote on her Instagram account. Instagram who assured this “is a lack of respect and the majority (of the tennis players) have felt that way.”

Sabalenka shared that “I don’t feel safe moving on this court for a long time, the ball doesn’t hit very well, this is not acceptable to me in a situation where there is so much at stake.”

Although he made it clear that the criticism is for the WTA not for the Mexicans.

“I would like to make clear my appreciation to the organizers, to those who helped build the field at the last minute, I know perfectly well that it is not their mistake, I want to make it clear, neither is it the Mexican fans who have come to see us who I love,” reads his Instagram account.

The WTA on this occasion has already spoken out regarding the different messages that Aryna Sabalenka has given both in the WTA Finals press conferences and on her social networks.

The tour ruled out that the central court has irregularities due to being built in a short time, in addition, it noted that they have worked despite the rains that are recorded at the headquarters.

“The team has worked hard and quickly amidst climatic challenges to ensure the stadium and pitch meet the strictest standards,” the WTA reported.

The organization stated that “we are happy to host the WTA Finals in Cancun for the first time and we are working hard to build a stadium for the eight best players and the doubles teams to compete.”
