The WNBA Announces Addition of 13th Franchise Owned by Golden State Warriors

The WNBA announced Thursday – three days before the start of its final which will pit the New York Liberty (where Marine Johannès plays) against the Las Vegas Aces – the creation of its 13th franchise. This is the first time since 2008 that a new team has been created within the North American women’s pro league.

And, like the Indiana Pacers, Minnesota Timberwolves, Brooklyn Nets, Phoenix Suns and Washington Wizards, it will belong to an NBA team, in this case the Golden State Warriors, seven times champions in their history (1947 and 1956 under the name of Philadelphia Warriors, then 1975, 2015, 2017, 2018 and 2022 with their current name).

The future franchise is currently named Golden State WNBA Team. The costs surrounding its creation have not been disclosed. The team will start playing from 2025 and will be led by Joe Lacob and Peter Guber, the two co-owners of the Warriors. Its matches will take place at the Chase Center in San Francisco, which is also the home of Golden State.
