The Villa de Avilés: A Highly Anticipated Judo Tournament Begins

The wait is finally over. Today the long-awaited “Villa de Avilés” begins, a tournament in which nearly two thousand judokas from all over Spain and countries like Moldova or France will face off to win Avilés glory. Judo Avilés, the organizing club, faces the event in the middle of a change of cycle, but even so its technicians cannot hide the excitement they have for their great event. “Our challenge is to repeat the level of quality of previous editions and for the participants to demonstrate that they are the best in Spain and Europe,” says Carlos Fernández, technical director of Judo Avilés and one of the organizers of the event. Fernández, who has been present at all editions, acknowledges that they have been overwhelmed by all the registrations they have had, although he regrets that this event does not come at the best time. “It will be difficult for the Asturians to get good results. Right now we are not at the best level, we are immersed in a change of cycle, but we are sowing to return to the level we were at,” says the man from Aviles, who wants to “do it as best as possible, without the pressure of it being at home.

Raquel Pascual agrees with Fernández’s point of view, who makes her debut at “Villa de Avilés” from a different point of view, that of coach of the club and organizer of the tournament. “We are in the middle of a process of change. We have to adapt,” says Pascual, who would like to debut in Asturias with as many medals as possible, “but I doubt it will be possible.” “I believe that, for Judo Avilés, there will be two medals in junior, three in cadet and three in children,” he predicts.

Despite it being her debut, the Catalan confesses that “nothing nervous.” “I am very sure of all the work we have done. Right now I have the same nerves as when we arrived after a nine-hour drive and saw the tatami from the stands,” says Pascual, who cannot stand the desire he has for everything to start. and to enjoy from a different perspective.

The action will start today at 9:00 a.m. at the El Quirinal sports center with a special visit. Adrián Barbón, president of the Principality, will attend the first day of competition, as he promised in the last edition. Cadets and juniors will be the ones who come to the fore on the first day of the tournament. On Sunday, the General Director of Sports, Manuela Fernández, is scheduled to attend the last day of combat, when the children’s and junior judokas will take to the tatami.
