In the 79:87 opening defeat in the Easycredit Basketball Bundesliga against Veolia Towers Hamburg on Friday, the MHP giants Ludwigsburg seemed to sorely miss new signing Marcus Garrett (24). But the playmaker was already back on the plane to the USA.

The Texan, who was on the Miami Heat squad in the NBA until a year ago, should have been the difference player for the Giants. It became the biggest flop in the club’s history.

MHP Riesen Ludwigsburg are parting ways with ex-NBA professional Marcus Garrett after three days

Coach Josh King (38) raved immediately after the signing: “Everything is great that Marcus is with us now. He is incredibly versatile, can defend four positions, he brings a new dimension to our team.”

Unfortunately, Garret brought two or three dimensions too many to the playoff semi-finalist of the previous season…

The guard didn’t warm up to his new surroundings at all. According to BILD information, for example, a problem for him was that as a BBL player you are not allowed to consume marijuana. Garrett most recently played for the Sioux Falls Skyforce in North Dakota and the Heat in Florida – two US states where marijuana use is legal.

Although Garret was informed by Ludwigsburg in advance of the move that it was not (yet) allowed in Germany, he was said to have been of the firm opinion that smoking weed was allowed in the BBL. Coach King made it clear to him: “Smoking weed isn’t allowed here and we won’t make any exceptions.”

In addition, Garrett apparently discovered to his disappointment that the Easycredit Bundesliga is on the rise as a world champion league, but is still some way away from NBA structures.

The 1.96 meter man, who secured the not entirely insignificant number 23 in basketball with the MHP Riesen, is said to have been of the opinion that every game had to be taken by plane, even to the local derby in Tübingen. The Tigers Tübingen hall is approximately 20 kilometers as the crow flies from the airport in Stuttgart-Echterdingen, but the giants also travel further distances usually by bus or train.

BILD learned: In the end, the biggest problem was Garrett’s fitness values, which must have been underground, especially on the ergometer, where he is said to have had problems even at comparatively low wattages. President Alexander Reil (55) even says in shock: “I do more on the bike than Garrett.”

After all: The poor fitness level gave the MHP giants the opportunity to get out of the contract, with which both sides apparently never really felt comfortable. Reil: “With so many misunderstandings, we had no choice but to immediately suspend the contract.”

Better an end with horror…
