The Sudbury Five Joins New Basketball Super League and Prepares for Inaugural Season

The Sudbury Five celebrates its entry into the new Basketball Super League for next season.

Team representatives and the president of the new league gathered Thursday morning for a press conference at the Sudbury Community Arena.

At the end of the last season, in May, we learned that the Five was one of three teams from the National Basketball League of Canada (NBCL) to join the new league, which will have six teams for its inaugural season which will begin on December 26.

Sudbury assistant coach Denis Gauthier says the organization is excited for the season and the years to come.

We still have four teams from Ontario, [plus] Montréal [et] Newfoundland, and we’re going to have teams from the United States, we hope next year.

President of the new league, David Magley, confirms that combining two leagues will allow for faster growth.

We will have twelve teams next season. And from there, we will build it faster and faster, he says.

David Magley also announced that the first all-star game of the new league will take place in Sudbury on March 9.

The league knows fans are really going to support the All-Star break. And that will help us in Sudbury to create a basketball atmosphere, says Denis Gauthier.
