Willy and René van de Kerkhof now feel sorry for Ajax. The Amsterdammers are not performing at all and more than 100 million euros also seems to have evaporated in unprofitable transfers.
“I spoke to my old buddy Hugo Hovenkamp (club icon of AZ, red.) and he said that we should put up a statue for Mislintat (the now dismissed technical director of Ajax, ed.),” René van de Kerkhof tells Broadcasting Brabant. “Because that man single-handedly ruined Ajax. It will take a few years before there is a top team there again.”
The schadenfreude has even made way for pity. “It’s crazy how one German can make such a mess of things in such a short time. That next match against Utrecht will be a relegation cracker. That’s going to be quite a game!”, said Van de Kerkhof.
