The Raúl Calvo Judo Memorial celebrates its 50th edition this weekend with an attractive competition poster at the Ciudad de Cádiz Sports Complex, at the height of an event that pays tribute to the Cadiz judoka who died on November 5, 1971 in an unfortunate sports accident in Madrid, with an amazing record for his just turned 20 years old.
With the aim of perpetuating his memory, the national officials of judo and sport in general decided to create the International Championship from Spain junior, who would bear his name and for whom at that time the age limit was established as that of Raúl Calvo when he suffered the fatal accident.
Half a century later, international teams or teams, such as Spainof the Armed forces and from all the autonomous communities participate in a prestigious event and in which on this occasion the national teams of Portugal, Morocco, Switzerland and Spain, the representative of the Armed Forces, a group made up of refugees and the autonomous selections of Catalonia, Extremadura, Murcia, Madrid and Andalusia.
The Memorial, now set for absolute category for mixed teams, will be played with combats lasting four minutes, according to weights and grades. The weights contemplated are: -57kg, -70kg, +70kg for women and -73kg, -90kg +90kg for men. Regarding grade, the minimum belt color to compete in this event is brown belt.
Regarding the program, after the weighing and documentation control that takes place between Friday afternoon and Saturday morning, at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday The fights will begin, with judogis mandatory in white and blue.
In parallel to the Memorial, the organization has established a program during the weekend with various activities. To participate in them, interested parties must contact FANJYDA through email: [email protected].
On Saturday there will be a seminar with international expert and training from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., on the tatami of the central court of the Ciudad de Cádiz. Likewise, on Saturday and Sunday, there will be a master class from 10:00 to 13:00, with the teaching of Arsen Galstyan, Olympic gold; Niko Sherazadishvili, world gold, and Vitaly Makarov, Olympic gold and world silver.
This same Saturday afternoon, starting at 4:00 p.m., the public will be able to enjoy a exhibition judo by the Tadeo Judo Club of El Puerto, one of the most representative in the province, and with the so-called Children’s Judo Festival, in which all the Silver Cup clubs will take part. Already on Sunday, a federative training session will be held with all categories on the same stage.
The relevance of the Memorial, especially a year in which it celebrates its 50th edition, is evident with the presence in Cádiz of the president of the Spanish Olympic Committee, Alejandro Blancowhich will be received this Saturday at City Hall, accompanied by the president of the Spanish Judo Federation, Juan Carlos Barco.
