The Port of Barcelona makes changes to cruise operations |

The Port Authority of Barcelona (Spain) has carried out the relocation of its cruise and ferry operations from the Barcelona Nord pier, located in the World Trade Center, to the Adosado pier, a location more distant from the urban center of the city.

This transition process has impacted approximately 340 annual cruise and ferry stops, including the services provided by Balearia to the Balearic Islands, and has culminated with the departure of the World Navigator cruise ship from the shipping company Mystic Cruises.

It is worth mentioning that the closure of the Barcelona Nord dock for cruise and ferry operations is part of the joint strategy of the port of Barcelona and the city council to move cruise activity away from urban areas and concentrate it on the Adossat dock.

This measure is in addition to other actions previously taken in the same direction, such as the closure of the cruise terminal at Maremagnum in 2018, which reduced operational terminals from eight to seven and limited the number of calls to one ship per terminal.

The Catalan enclave has also promoted the arrival of more modern and sustainable cruise ships, which in many cases use cleaner fuels such as LNG, thus contributing to the reduction of emissions in this activity. Likewise, considerable investments are being made to electrify the Adossat dock, at an approximate cost of €80 million, as part of the total investment of more than €270 million.

This change in operations not only has environmental benefits, by reducing emissions and pollution from ships, but will also open the Barcelona North dock to citizens, freeing up 630 meters of dock line and providing the city of Barcelona with more than 13,600 m² of new public spaces. These spaces will be available once the 37th edition of the Copa América ends, in autumn 2024.

On the other hand, Cosco Shipping Lines has added a new stopover in the Port of Barcelona in a service that links the western Mediterranean with ports in the eastern part of the United States and Mexico.
