The Passionate Journey of a Retired Police Officer Turned Archer

Manuel Jesús González Zambrano, is 65 years old and is a Local Police Officer, currently retired. His passion for the bow, with which he now hunts, comes from when he was little. An activity that requires a lot of emotional stability and from which many values are obtained.

– Why do you become an archer?

The hobby comes from me since I was little, when we played Indians and Gunfighters; I was always the Indian and we “made” our own bows, whose arrows were the spokes of the bicycle wheels; but, as was logical, you leave it as you get older. It was around the time I was about 45 years old, I saw a friend who shot archery and, since then, I was “bitten by the bug”…until today.

– What types of bows do you handle?

Traditional, Longbow and Pulleys. The latter, with traditional shooting, that is, without scopes, stabilizers, or trigger; As they say, by eye.

– Are you federated and have you taken improvement courses?

Yes, I am federated by the Hunting Federation (FEDEXCAZA), and by the Sports Shooting Federation (FEXTA). As for improvement courses, yes, I am also an archery instructor by FEXTA, based on the completion and approval of a course and I have the Qualified Archer Hunter card (T-2) by the Spanish Hunting Federation; also for the completion and approval of the corresponding theoretical and practical course.

– What championships have you attended and what best classifications have you obtained?

I have attended several Extremadura Bow Hunting Tour Championships, organized by the Hunting Federation, where I have climbed the three “steps” of podium, champion, runner-up and third place. I have also attended several Spanish Championships, also of Bow Hunting Tours, where my best result has been proclaiming myself runner-up in Spain this year 2023. On two other occasions I have been in third position. As for the sports shooting competitions organized by FEXTA, I have also been champion of Extremadura for several years, about 8 or 10 times, as well as runner-up and third place… I haven’t been bad at it.

– Do you practice hunting with wild animals, in awaits, hunts and stalking?

Of course yes, I am passionate about those three bowhunting disciplines.

– Since when did you have the passion for hunting?

Hunting with a bow… I want to detail it, because I don’t hunt in other ways. I hunt with a bow since I retired, about five years ago, a few years, but very intense, I do not miss a bow hunt that “crosses” my path and, in my preserve, I do waits and the occasional stalk.

– What is the bow hunting specialty that you like the most?

Well, precisely the one that I practice the least, stalking. It is the most complicated to practice with the bow, since it requires a very special approach to the animal. Precisely these days with the rutting of the deer and the snoring of the fallow deer, they give us more opportunities and better conditions for stalking.

.- Could a goalkeeper school be created in the sports schools of Los Santos de Maimona, especially for the little ones?

Of course and without a doubt yes, but with institutional support from the City Council in the transfer of facilities, purchase of materials, etc. It would be very, very interesting. A friend and I, years ago, were archery classroom instructors at the Zafra Municipal Sports Foundation, which was very successful.
