The New England Patriots in a Downward Spiral: Can Caleb Williams Bring Them Back?

Week after week, the New England Patriots have been able to improve, but unfortunately for their fans they do so in a direction opposite to the line of success.

Although the Foxborough team has already captured a victory that puts it above the Carolina Panthers (the only team without a win), its performance is in a downward spiral never seen before under the control of Bill Belichick.

The trend of their performances so far in the calendar aligns with their total points that are lower game by game (20,17,15,3,0).

The 34-0 loss at home against the New England Patriots was the second-worst loss without scoring a point behind the 52-0 defeat by the 1972 Miami Dolphins, the only undefeated champion in the Super Bowl era.

For the first time since 2000 (Belichick’s first season), the Patriots are 1-4.

As we already mentioned, the Patriots have not yet surpassed 20 points in any of their games, a swampy terrain in which they were only in the 1965, 1971 and 1955 campaigns). The offense has 10 turnovers.

Tom Brady’s transition to a franchise quarterback has been far from successful at this point with Mac Jones.

With TB12 the Patriots had a record of 219 wins and 64 losses, a winning percentage of .774.

Without Brady: 80-92 with a percentage of .465.

Jones is not the man New England needs to regain its greatness and Belichick knows it. Almost no one in history knows this game better than the man known as the Monk.

That is why the Patriots have a burning candle within the detestable 2023 campaign: Caleb Williams.

The USC quarterback not only won the Heisman last season, but has been one of the fundamental pieces for the Trojans program to return to the national spotlight after years in the shadows due to the punishments derived from its bad policies in the recruitment of players and the excesses allowed to athletes.

The last time the Patriots had the first pick they had to decide between Drew Bledsoe and Rick Mirer. The last time they had a top five pick was a year later (fourth overall), in 1994, which became Willie McGinest.

Both were good bets for New England.

Caleb Williams is the biggest talent at the position since Trevor Lawrance arrived in the National Football League. He is on his way to his second straight Heisman and will be a future franchise quarterback for any franchise that takes him. The Patriots want to be that team.

Williams has 21 touchdown passes this season in the NCAAAKATELYN MULCAHYAFP

In five games this season, Williams has 1,603 yards, 21 touchdown passes and one interception.

Mac Jones has already thrown six interceptions and only five touchdown passes.

In search of the Shula brand

The Patriots’ future centers on how bad they can be this year at getting and convincing Williams to take the balls under center at Gillette Stadium.

Belichick needs 30 wins in the regular season to surpass Don Shula for the all-time lead, with Jones surely not reaching that number.

Shula tiene 347 winner.
