The naked king in sneakers – are the legendary Kenyan running traditions holding on to ‘syringes’?

Why have anti-doping fighters gone after Kenya? Statistics provide an explanation – the number of caught athletes is approaching two hundred, and it is clear to everyone that it will reach much further. The fight against doping users has been started by the independent organization established five years ago – the Athletics Integrity Unit – AIU, which is trying to clean up the mess that Kenya has successfully collected over the decades. For so long, the athletes of this country have been among the world’s leading athletes who have participated in the fight for medals in middle and long distance races. And they are the reason why Kenya’s name is in second place – behind the USA – if you look at the table of medals won at the world athletics championships.

Are Kenya’s environment and the nation’s genetics the only prerequisites for how this success was forged? Some doping experts have compared what is happening in Kenya to the doping program implemented by East Germany, which guaranteed medals in the 1970s and 1980s, as well as to the system implemented by Russia, which ended with international disqualification. And yet – the case of Kenya is something unique.
