The Mysterious Disappearance of Bison Dele: A Tragic NBA Story

It is one of the great mysteries of NBA history. What happened to basketball player Bison Dele over 20 years ago? It all started with a boat trip.

Bison Dele, also known by his former name Brian Williams, played in the NBA for eight years. At that time he was active in the US professional basketball league for a total of five teams (Orlando Magic, Denver Nuggets, LA Clippers, Chicago Bulls, Detroit Pistons). In 1999, however, he unexpectedly ended his career at the age of 30 – even though his current contract would have promised him a further 36 million US dollars (around 34 million euros). He then enjoyed his sports pension for three years, during which time he traveled a lot. But then something tragic happened: Bison Dele disappeared without a trace.

In July 2002, he was traveling with his girlfriend Serena Karlan and his older brother Miles Dabord on his catamaran “Hakuna Matata” near the South Pacific island of Tahiti. Skipper Bertrand Saldo was also on board. In the end, only one person returned alive from the boat trip: Miles Dabord.

However, the 35-year-old initially went into hiding while the authorities began investigating the missing person case. He was finally temporarily arrested in early September when he forged his brother’s signature and used his brother’s passport to buy $152,000 worth of gold. The catamaran also reappeared in the harbor of the Tahitian city of Taravao – with bullet holes presumably patched, new paint and a new name.

Miles Dabord confessed

Authorities suspected that Miles Dabord killed his brother, his girlfriend and the skipper. Dabord made a confession, but according to him things went differently on board: he and his brother got into an argument. Dele’s girlfriend was accidentally hit. Her head hit part of the boat and she died from her injuries. The boat driver wanted to report her death, whereupon Dele murdered him. Dabord then killed his brother in self-defense and threw the three bodies into the sea.

Dabord remained the only witness. But then he died at the end of September. A few months after the incident on board, he took an overdose of insulin. The three disappeared people have not been found to this day and the tragic story has not yet been fully clarified.
