The Spanish cyclist Javier Romo has signed for the Movistar Team, the only Spanish team in the top UCI WorldTeams category, for the next two seasons with the aim of continuing to grow in the elite with the help of the Navarrese squad, which is also reinforced with the veteran Italian climber Davide Formolo, a real insurance as soon as the road slopes upwards.
“Movistar Team announces this Thursday the incorporation of Javier Romo (Villafranca de los Caballeros, Toledo, ESP; 1999). The cyclist from La Mancha, current member of the Astana Qazaqstan Team, has signed a contract for two seasons (2024-25) with the team by Eusebio Unzué,” the team announced in a statement.
Romo, Spanish Under-23 champion in 2020 after just a few races in the cycling squad upon arriving from triathlon, signed for Astana in 2021 and has spent the last three years in the ranks of the Kazakh team.
Despite two injuries in 2023 – a maxillary fracture and fistula due to a fall in Itzulia and a broken vertebra in La Vuelta -, this year he showed the details that motivated his leap: best youngster and 7th overall in the Vuelta a Burgos and several attacks in Lap 23, which he had to abandon.
“Movistar Team is a new opportunity to continue training as a professional cyclist. I am looking to put into practice what I have learned these three years in Astana, and having the extra motivation of racing for the leading Spanish team in the top category is a great incentive,” Romo assured.
“I want to show that I am a more mature rider than a few years ago and that I can maintain the good level that I have shown some days of the season, but for longer throughout the year. On the other hand, I think I can get victories and also help my colleagues get them,” he added.
As happened on Wednesday, the Movistar Team announced more than one signing on the same day. On this occasion, the reinforcement is Davide Formolo, a 30-year-old Italian climber who arrives from the UAE Team Emirates, and who signs for three seasons, until the end of 2026, with the telephone team.
“With Formolo, the Telephones add ten campaigns of WorldTour experience and great results. Davide treasures a stage in the Giro d’Italia (2015), a national championship (2019), successes in Dauphiné (2020) or Catalunya (2019), a podium in Liege (2019) and 14 appearances in Grand Tours, with two top-ten (2017 and 2018) in his beloved Giro (eight appearances) and a 9th place in La Vuelta (2016)”, highlighted the team.
“I think a team like Movistar Team is the ideal place for the type of rider I am. I think I can play an important role in supporting the team leaders in the Grand Tours, and at the same time, look for results in one-day tests or wherever the team is needed. Looking forward to starting to work with everyone,” said Formolo.
