In April 2024, candidates for post-economic preparatory business schools will have to tackle a new general culture theme: “violence”. Aurélie Palud, literature professor, invites you to think about the links between violence and sport.

To help eco prep students prepare for this subject, the Student offers nine videos to enrich your thinking. In this episode, Aurélie Palud, literature teacher at the Ozenne high school in Toulouse (31), offers you to articulate the notions of violence and sport.
Sport: violence codified by society
Pour do not only deal with very heavy themes like genocide, murder or rape, Aurélie Palud explains the link between violence and sport. An interesting perspective as the competitions will be held a few weeks before the Olympic and Paralympic Games, organized in France.
Using the example of archery or boxing, she shows how an “initial violence – which aimed to injure or kill – was channeled and reoriented.
It also allows the release of energy more everyday and with more banal violence, as in English colleges which promoted sport in the 19th century.
Inflicting violence on oneself
In this link, we can also consider the idea of sporting activity asa violence that we impose on ourselves. In the movies Million dollar baby or The Williams methodthis effort, this suffering is shown.
But the professor also observes, in these works, “in the background, a violence of the world“: machismo, poverty or racism. A violence which can, moreover, spread in the audienceas seen in another movie, Raging bull.
Also returning to the question of the limits of violence in sport, but also cases of sexist and sexual violence, Aurélie Palud links this connection between sport and violence to current issues.
