The Dominance of Idalys Ortiz in Women’s Judo Continues at the 2023 Pan American Games

The natural course of the 2023 Pan American Games continues and in these coming days it is the turn of judo, among other sports. The martial art originating from Japan is one of the most followed disciplines in this competition thanks to the great tradition of this sport in some countries on the continent.

Last Saturday the 28th, both the men’s and women’s events began. The order to be followed by the organization is ascending in terms of weight divisions, with the morning session being the qualifying round and the afternoon session being the decisive one for the medals for which the judokas from each of the countries represented have trained so hard.

The queen category of women’s judo is +78 kg. In that division, the Pan-American queen without a doubt is Idalys Ortiz. The 34-year-old Cuban is one of the most successful in all of history. She has competed in 4 editions of the Olympic Games, winning 4 medals, a gold (London 2012), two silvers (Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020) and a bronze (Beijing 2008).

The fourth Pan American crown

In addition to the prestigious Olympic achievements, Ortiz has three gold medals in the Pan American Games, being the absolute dominant in her category since 2011. In this 2022 edition, the Cuban will seek to extend her reign for more than a decade, in a division that seems to continue without rival for the great 34-year-old judoka.

Idalys Ortiz continues competing in the +78 kg category. That means that she must compete this Monday, October 30. As announced on the official website of the Pan American Games, the qualifiers for said weight will take place in session 1 (10:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.) and the medal dispute in session 2 (3:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m.) . In the event that Ortiz revalidates the medal, she will receive it in the ceremony scheduled between 5:00 p.m. and 5:40 p.m. that same day.
