The Detroit Pistons: Longest Playoff Drought in NBA History Continues

A record that no team wants to have. And which instead the all-American obsession with numbers and statistics highlights mercilessly. The Detroit Pistons are the NBA team that hasn’t won a playoff game in the longest time, and in Michigan they are breaking every record (because the streak, for Cade Cunningham and his companions, is unfortunately still open). In fact, the last time the Pistons emerged victorious from a playoff game dates back to May 26, 2008, game 4 of the Eastern final series against the Boston Celtics (impacted at 2-2 with that success, before losing it 2- 4). Since then – in addition to those two defeats against the Celtics – there have come four knockouts against the Cleveland Cavs the following year, in the 2009 playoffs, six consecutive seasons of absence from the playoffs, the return in 2016 to lose 0-4 again against Cleveland, two more years without a postseason, yet another 0-4 against Milwaukee in 2019 and no other playoff appearances since. It has therefore been more than 15 years since Michigan has celebrated a victory in the postseason, due to a series of consecutive knockouts which currently stands at 14. The Pistons can partially console themselves only by looking at other US professional sports: the record belongs to Minnesota Major League Twins (18 knockouts in a row in the playoffs), followed by the Chicago Blackhawks in the NHL (16) with the Los Angeles Kings (always NHL hockey) tied with the Pistons at 14.

For all these teams, however, the losing streak has already been interrupted – a few days ago that of the Twins, which lasted 19 years; in 1979 that of the Blackhawks and in 2001 that of the Kings – while in Detroit the new Pistons of Cunningham and Ivery, Duren and Thompson hope to put an end to the curse as early as next spring.
