The countdown begins for the peak of women’s tennis, the WTA Finals, where only the eight best players of the year and the best eight pairs participate, this time it will be played in Cancún Quintana Roo. The event will take place from October 29 to November 5 and will be the second year that it will be held in Mexico, since in 2021 Guadalajara was the venue.
In interview for RECORD, Gustavo Santoscoyco-director of the WTA, talked about how this sporting event took place, whose objectives are to attract tourism and provide top-level shows to our country.
“We had had talks year after year with the Ministry of Tourism and the Government of Cancun to bring high-level events to Quintana Roo and we sent a request to the WTA presenting an ambitious project that attracts a large number of tourists from all over the world and was the winner,” said Santoscoy.
“It will be an unprecedented event that will change the history of tennis. An event without description that will mark a new era in tennis,” he added.
The WTA once again placed its trust in Mexico in the fifth Grand Slam, becoming the fifth country to host the WTA Finals on multiple occasions, along with Spain, Qatar, Turkey and Singapore.
“The WTA is already very clear that Mexico is a great country to host tennis events. Today there are more than four events in the nation, including WTA 1000 Guadalajara, WTA 500 Monterrey, WTA 250 Mérida and WTA 125 Tampico. Mexico has become a strong power in women’s tennis,” he continued.
“The WTA Finals 2021 were a complete success. In addition, they are looking for a tourist destination, where they can bring together fans from all over the world and even though there were other cities, they voted for Mexico,” he concluded.
So far, in addition to Aryna Sabalenka, Iga Swiatek, Coco Gauff, Elena Rybakina and Jessica Pegula have already secured their ticket to the Cancun 2023 Finals, leaving only three places available for the great competition.
