The Changing Surface of the Shanghai Masters 1000: Daniil Medvedev’s Concerns

Since the last edition of the Shanghai Masters 1000 in 2019, won by Daniil Medvedev, the surface has changed a lot.

The world number 3 indeed sounded the alarm on this subject during his on-court interview after his victory against Cristian Garin in the round of 32 (6−3, 6–3, in 1h32 of play).

“We went from Beijing to Shanghai so quickly, with different balls and surfaces. Before, Shanghai was one of the fastest tournaments on the circuit now I don’t know which is slower between it and Indian Wells. That’s how it is, you have to play like that. This season I managed to play well on slow hard courts, so I will try to do that here as well”noted the Russian.

For a place in the round of 16, he will meet Sebastian Korda, against whom he lost in three sets at the start of the year at the Australian Open.
