Who will be chosen as best player of the 2022-23 season by France Football magazine? The answer comes out this Monday, at 3:45 pm. Inter Miami’s Lionel Messi is the big favorite to win his eighth Ballon d’Or, after winning his third world championship with the Argentine national team. But there are other strong competitors, such as Norwegian Erling Haaland, top scorer for Manchester City, English and European champions last season, and Frenchman Kylian Mbappé, from Paris Saint-Germain. The event will be broadcast on TNT.

The French magazine takes the European season into account to select a list of 30 finalists (see the nominees below), from which journalists from 180 countries will rank from first to fifth who were the best football players of the season. Thus, athletes receive a score that will be added together to determine the winner of the Ballon d’Or award.

In addition to the men’s award, the Ballon d’Or will also be awarded to the best player from last season. The Kopa trophies are also distributed, for the best under-21 player, Yashin, for the best goalkeeper, Gerd Müller, for the top scorer, Sócrates, for players who stand out for social actions, and Club of the Year.

Frenchman Karim Benzema, currently at Saudi Al-Ittihad, was the winner of the Ballon d’Or in 2022. Spain’s Alexia Putellas won the women’s version of the trophy, while Gavi, her Barcelona colleague, was chosen as the best young player. Sadio Mané won the Sócrates award, and Robert Lewandowski, the Gerd Müller award. Belgian Thibaut Courtois lifted the Yashin trophy, and Manchester City was chosen as club of the year.

Cleber Machado is the Brazilian representative in the Ballon d’Or voting

Brazil’s representative in France Football’s electoral college will once again be the narrator Cleber Machado, now on SBT. To Estadão, the announcer told which criteria he takes into consideration when voting.

“The magazine itself offers the list. Its suggestion is the same criteria that I use: the player’s performance in the season, not the world’s all-time performance. Sometimes, people get confused. It’s not to say whether Messi is better than than Modric. That is to say that that year Modric was the best player in the world. So, I use as criteria individual performance, technique, importance for the team and the result of the team and selection in the season. Competitions, such as the Copa do The World and Champions League have a lot of weight”, said Cleber, who will soon return to narrating the most important tournament in Europe on SBT and who is usually the tip of the balance in votes like this.

In 2022, Cleber chose Benzema as the best in the world, agreeing with the general vote. Second, on the narrator’s list, was the Egyptian Salah, third, the Belgian De Bruyne, and fourth, the Brazilian Vinícius Júnior. Mbappé closed the list. The narrator also told how the invitation to participate in the vote came about.

“The Association of Sports Chroniclers of the State of São Paulo (Aceesp) had a time at a football field behind the Center Norte shopping center, owned by Fupe, and we would go and play ball there in the morning. And among those who played there was a French journalist who worked in Gazeta Esportiva and wrote for France Football. He told me that they were expanding the electoral college for the award and asked if he could suggest me. Then they started sending me emails and since then I’ve been voting annually”, said Cleber, who cannot reveal their votes before the official release.

What are the differences between the Ballon d’Or and FIFA The Best?

Until 1994, France Football only awarded European players with the Ballon d’Or. Afterwards, he released athletes of other nationalities, as long as they were linked to a club on the Old Continent. In 2006, voting expanded to include all nationalities and clubs from all over the planet. FIFA established the global award in 1991.

As for the electoral college, there are also differences. In the case of the FIFA award, the captains and coaches of the teams and the public also vote, while in the France Football award only journalists are accredited to give their opinion.

The FIFA award is usually awarded in the first months of the year, while the Ballon d’Or is awarded in October. The two trophies were unified between 2010 and 2015, but in 2016 the events returned to being isolated.
