Taylor Swift’s 1989 (Taylor’s Version) Inspires TikTok Trend Reflecting on Past Relationships

Taylor Swift’s song “1989” inspired people to reflect on their past relationships.

Taylor Swift’s 1989 (Taylor’s Version) is finally streaming and, unsurprisingly, fans are resonating with the singer’s lyrics about past love and frustrations with her exes. Just days after the re-recording was completed, a new trend appeared on TikTok centered around the vault song “Now That We Don’t Talk.”

Clocking in at just two minutes and 26 seconds, “Now That We Don’t Talk” explores the good and bad of no longer being in a relationship with an ex (which is probably Harry Styles in Swift’s case). Swift talks about “missing the old ways” and not wanting her ex to change — but, as she says, “I guess I don’t have a say / now that we’re not talking.”

In the end of the song, Swift revels in the benefits of no longer being in this relationship:

I don’t need to pretend I like acid rock/
Or that I would like to be on a mega yacht /
With important men who have important thoughts /
I guess maybe I’m better now that we’re not talking

TikTokers, especially women, have flocked to the platform to create their own version of this verse. As the creators sing the lyrics, they caption the videos with their own experiences – like no longer needing to pretend to like Kanye West’s music or baseball games, or not noticing D’s hairline. ‘an ex. The sound, created by TikTokker @victoreeuh, is associated with more than 9,000 videos so far, many of which follow this trend.

Although most of the videos are about past romantic relationships, like the song, some can also be about friendships:

“All you girls are in hell,” Twitter/X user @ExquisiteWill commented in a thread about the trend; we honestly can’t disagree. Given Taylor Swift’s impact on TikTok, the videos will likely keep coming. I guess we’re all better off!
