Tatjana Maria (36) was eliminated in the first round of the WTA tournament in Zhengzhou, China with bitter deja vu.
As was the case two weeks earlier in Tokyo, the currently only German tennis player in the top 100 of the world rankings had to admit defeat to Ludmila Samsonowa in two sets at the start. On Tuesday, Maria (WTA 55th) lost 3:6, 3:6 .
In the round of 16, however, Laura Siegemund now has the chance to do better against the eleventh-seeded Russian.
The 35-year-old from Metzingen, who fought her way through the qualification in Zhengzhou, is challenging Samsonowa after her 6:2, 6:3 in the first round against the Chinese Zhu Lin.
