Next year, the World Rally Championship (WRC) stage will take place in Latvia for the first time. The stage director of the event, Raimonds Strokšs, told “LSM.lv” in more detail about the organizational matters.

It has already been announced that the first WRC stage in history will take place in Latvia from July 18 to 21, the World Motor Sports Council of the International Automobile Federation (FIA) decided on Thursday. The rally will cover the territory from Liepāja to Riga, with speed stages also taking place in Tukums, Talsi and Talsu districts, Kuldīgas and Dienvikkurzeme districts.

“We were a bit lucky with the calendar date, because they actually offered July. I guess it has to do with logistics planning and things like that. We also slightly adjusted the date ourselves, because we did not want to overlap with the Paris Olympic Games and the final tournament of the European Championship in football,” said the director of the rally. “We are doing this for the first time and we wanted the attention of the sports community and sports people to be undivided, so that it was only for us. We managed to come to an agreement and I am only happy about that.”

“We have held the World Rallycross Championship, there have been stages of the European Rally Championship (ERC) and all kinds of other competitions, but then you start working on this project and realize that it is such a big, unnatural, complicated, logistically complex event. It’s hard to describe, I can’t even count how many worksheets I have, how I try to prioritize what to start the day with. I’m not complaining, I’m just saying that it’s radically different,” said the organizer.
