What a game! Dominic Stricker (ATP 96) started like a fire brigade and slammed the balls around his opponent Casper Ruud (ATP 8). The Swiss’s persistence turned into something countable early on. In the fifth game of the game, Stricker managed the break, which he never let go of.

The second movement began as the first had ended. Stricker easily kept up the pace against the top 10 player and the St. Jakobshalle was buzzing. But a catastrophic game threw a spanner in the works for Stricker. The 21-year-old made two double faults in a row, Ruud got the break and the second set 6:3.

The third round began with a moment of shock. But Stricker fended off three break points in the first game when the score was 0:40. The Bernese then found their way back to their old form. Both players held their serve, the tiebreak had to bring a decision. And there the underdog dominated the rallies and secured the match win after 2:26 hours.

Stricker joked afterwards during the winner’s interview: “My coach told me, just try to take the scepter in your hand. I would say I managed it quite well.” And how. Stricker sent Ruud into the shower with 7:1 and then enjoyed the standing ovation in the St. Jakobshalle, which was almost filled to capacity. (jos)
