The students of the Steinbrinkschule have now explored their newly designed schoolyard with a schoolyard rally: As part of a small ceremony, Mayor Daniel Schranz and district mayor Ulrich Real opened the courtyard of the Sterkrader elementary school with the children and the staff.
“More green, more opportunities for exercise and play, more unsealed space: we have achieved a lot with our investment of around 670,000 euros in the redesign of the schoolyard,” says Mayor Daniel Schranz: “On the one hand, this place offers more development opportunities and more fun for the children and, on the other hand, is – in addition to the redesigned small market and the plans for the reconstruction of Bahnhofstrasse – another building block in our concept of making Sterkrader City better prepared for the consequences of climate change.”
A climbing frame, a climbing tower and a bouldering wall for scrambling, as well as a basketball hoop and a jungle path that the around 280 girls and boys from the Steinbrinkschule can go behind the newly built cafeteria: all of this brings more fun and more exercise into the children’s everyday lives . The 2,400 square meter, newly designed schoolyard is also dedicated to ecological issues and outdoor learning – with a freshly landscaped school garden and an open-air classroom. New trees will also provide more shade in the future.
