Sölden’s Giant Gentlemen Cancelled Due to Strong Winds: Organizers Forced to Make Tough Decision

The giant gentlemen from Sölden was finally canceled. The wind, which strengthened after the passage of 47 competitors, got the better of the organizers’ efforts. Gusts of 100 km/h were recorded.

The decision was taken at 11:45 a.m., after a very long interruption during which conditions did not improve. Wearing bib 47, the Slovak Adam Zampa concluded his round while the finishing arch threatened to fly away. This advertising arch was also removed immediately.

The wind had already forced the organizers to lower the start of this inaugural event of the men’s White Circus. Winner of the last two giants contested on the Rettenbach glacier, the ogre Marco Odermatt had to admit defeat in the first round, setting the 2nd time behind the Austrian Marco Schwarz. “It’s a shame for us, but the conditions were no longer fair so it’s normal to have canceled“, noted the Nidwalden, emphasizing that he had not been bothered by the wind.

This cancellation will certainly not bother the ambitious Loïc Meillard, who dreamed of making a big splash on his 27th birthday. The skier from Hérémence experienced an unfortunate elimination in the first round, losing a ski after 25 seconds of racing. A hardly conclusive test for its new fixation…

This is the second year in a row that Sölden can only organize one of the two scheduled events. In 2022, it was the women’s giant, won on Saturday by Ticino Lara Gut-Behrami, which was canceled. The first men’s giant of the winter should therefore take place on December 9 in Val d’Isère.
