Sokratis Papastathopoulos hopes for a transfer-free transfer to Bayern Munich, announces Florian Plettenberg, journalist for the German branch of Sky Sport.

Sokratis has been on a free transfer since leaving Olympiakos and has turned down an offer from Real Betis. The Greek defender is waiting for a proposal from the Rekordmeister.

Earlier this month, various media in Germany reported that Bayern was considering signing Jérôme Boateng. That transfer-free transfer did not take place, because Bayern’s supporters turned against Boateng’s arrival.

Boateng is suspected of assaulting his girlfriend. Bayern fans even threatened not to come to the match against SC Freiburg if the club continued negotiations with Boateng.

Sokratis is now mentioned by Sky Sport as a possible alternative. However, Plettenberg writes that there is no contact between Bayern and Sokratis yet.

However, Bayern does need a new man marker. Kim Min-jae is now the only fit center back. Matthijs de Ligt and Dayot Upamecano are in the rag basket.

Sokratis started his career at AEK Athens. He ended up at Borussia Dortmund in 2013 via Genoa, AC Milan and Werder Bremen. He caused such a stir in Dortmund that five years later he moved to Arsenal for sixteen million euros. He did not leave the best impression at the Gunners. In 2021 he left for Olympiakos on a free transfer.
