CAVALLINO – She is nine months pregnant, he dies while accompanying her to the hospital. A young family torn apart by yet another tragedy that took place on the streets of Salento on a bloody Thursday marked by the pain of another young life gone. The day opened, unfortunately, with the news of a new accident with terrible implications, which occurred this morning just before 9am, on the Maglie-Lecce state road, near the stretch from San Donato di Lecce to Cavallino and which involved a couple of peers.
A 22-year-old from Cutrofiano, Stefano Maggio, lost his life after the car, a Fiat Punto, in which he was traveling together with his partner, the same age as him, originally from Poggiardo and close to the ninth month of pregnancy, overturned. The victim, who worked in a well-known bar in her town, was well known and respected in his community, now shocked by this loss.
According to the first reconstructions, the two proceeded at the Galugnano exit, a hamlet of San Donato di Lecce, and Cavallino on the long curve in the direction of Lecce, which leads onto a straight road before arriving at the shopping center that stands nearby, when they lost control of the car, overturning on the road after a violent impact against the guardrail. They were going to the hospital for some checks to be carried out on the girl, who had been having contractions in the hours preceding the dramatic event. It is probable that the feeling of the two was that of waiting and the desire to enjoy the vision of a child on the way as soon as possible.
Then the imponderable becomes heartbreaking and the tragedy arrives precisely at the moment that should have been special for the two who already lived together and now more than ever were planning a life together.
As mentioned, the dynamics are not yet clear. The emergency services were immediately on site, alerted by other motorists who had passed through the area and who witnessed the accident, with the arrival, in particular, of the fire brigade vehicles of the provincial command and those of the 118: for the boy, who was at the driving, there was nothing to be done and it was immediately necessary to confirm that he had died; while her pregnant partner, also 22 years old, was taken aboard an ambulance to the “Fazzi” in Lecce under code red. Once she arrived at the hospital, the medical staff immediately took action to assist the young woman, who gave birth to her baby: fortunately the newborn is well, while the mother’s condition, although conscious, remains delicate and carefully monitored.
Traffic police personnel are proceeding with the investigations and reconstruction of the incident. The Carabinieri were also on site, managing vehicular traffic during the rescue and safety operations.
