After the international break, we continue against the recently strong Fürth team in the Volkspark. The conditions are also good at FC St. Pauli – but before the game against Paderborn, Coach Hürzeler is putting the brakes on the euphoria. And he’s fighting to become a shooting star.

At the second division soccer team Hamburger SV, coach Tim Walter can probably rely on a trio again. Miro Muheim, Immanuel Pherai (both infections) and Laszlo Benes (gastrointestinal) are doing well again, said Walter before the game against Greuther Fürth on Saturday (1 p.m./Sky). “With this weather, something could always happen in the near future. But we are well prepared.”

The list of missing players is thinning out after several players from the second place in the table were unavailable or on international travel. “There were quite a few of us today,” said Walter. During the week, the thinned-out training squad was replenished by several youth players. “We have a very, very good exchange with the youth and always have a lot of players with us,” said Walter. “You just have to make sure during the international breaks that we have some youth national players and they aren’t always available.”

However, Lukasz Poreba is available. The defensive midfielder tore a muscle fiber in his thigh after his loan move to HSV and had to take a break. The 23-year-old was in the squad for the first time against Wehen Wiesbaden (1-1), but was not used. “I think he’s doing a very good job,” Walter said. “He is a good boy who accepts a lot, tries to implement a lot, has a high level of willingness.” Striker Andras Nemeth (ankle) is questionable. Captain Sebastian Schonlau (calf) and Anssi Suhonen (broken fibula) will definitely not be there against Fürth.

Walter expects Fürth, seventh in the table, to be a very unpleasant opponent. With guest coach Alexander Zorniger you can see “a very clear handwriting. “It’s also influenced by RB,” said Walter. Zorniger trained RB Leipzig from summer 2012 to spring 2015. “I think it’s great because he does his thing,” Walter said. “That’s why I have great respect for Alex.” HSV is expecting 55,500 spectators in the Volkspark on Saturday. The home area is sold out.

Pauli coach Fabian Hürzeler would like more peace in his environment

Meanwhile, the coach of city rivals and first in the table Fabian Hürzeler is trying to dampen the high spirits around him. “I am someone who likes to put the brakes on euphoria,” said the coach of the first in the table before the game at SC Paderborn on Saturday (1 p.m. / Sky). “If the team only heard praise and compliments – including from me – then we would stagnate at some point.”

Under the direction of the 30-year-old, Hamburg have not lost a competitive or friendly game in this series. St. Pauli drew 3-3 against Bundesliga side Werder Bremen during the international break. Here too, Hürzeler didn’t want to praise too much, “because we conceded three goals and we clearly analyzed and worked through that. If we act like that on defense, then we will also have huge problems against Paderborn.”

Hürzeler sees the seventh-place team as equal – like all teams in the league. “For me there is no clear favorite in the second division. Every game starts at 50:50.” Paderborn is a “strong team that can cause problems for any opponent,” said Hürzeler. The Hamburgers are accompanied by 2,300 fans – the guest contingent has been exhausted. Hürzeler also campaigned for offensive force Elias Saad to stay. “The important thing is that he can develop in an environment that is simply stable. St. Pauli offers him an environment at the moment, and the environment is the players who offer him that,” said the 30-year-old.

Elias Saad celebrates after scoring a goal – other clubs have long since become aware of him

Saad moved to Millerntor from regional league team FC Eintracht Norderstedt last winter and developed into a regular player. According to media reports, several clubs are interested in the 23-year-old winger. For Hamburg, Saad has contributed six goals and two assists in 17 competitive games so far.

When he was introduced almost a year ago, Saad dreamed of “playing for FC St. Pauli in a game at Millerntor”. The Hamburg native is now several steps further. “I think Elias has developed further in all areas,” said Hürzeler. “It was very difficult for him the first few months he was here. And the players there also picked him up, were there for him, supported him.”

According to Hürzeler, what was crucial for Saad’s development was that his teammates “continually challenged him off and on the pitch”. “He became more of a personality, he developed his defensive skills, he became even more effective and better at the end.”
