Successful start for Sebastian Ofner at the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Shanghai: The Austrian beat Juan Pablo Varillas in round one with 7:6 (3) and 7:6 (6). In the second round, the 27-year-old will face Tommy Paul, who was seeded twelfth.
Overall, Ofner showed a solid performance against Varillas. In the second set, the Styrian served to win the match, but Varillas broke at the last moment and forced a tiebreak. In this, Ofner initially lost a 6-2 lead, but he was then able to convert his fifth match point.
There was also good news from Vienna for Ofner on Thursday: the Austrian number one will be playing in the main competition of the Erste Bank Open thanks to a wildcard.
