SC Freiburg is introducing a crazy innovation when visiting the stadium and is now threatening yellow and red cards – for their own fans!
Anyone who does not adhere to the ban on smoking in the stands at the Bundesliga club can expect a warning (yellow) and, for the second rule violation on the same matchday, expulsion (red).

“The sports club has long been committed to promoting health and would now like to strengthen this again. Visitors who repeatedly ignore the smoking ban in force in the stands at the Europa-Park Stadium can now be warned with a yellow card. There is hardly any way to escape the smoke from people sitting next to you, especially in the seating stands. Anyone who deliberately violates the house rules again despite a yellow card and is caught doing so will consequently receive a red card and can be expelled from the stadium,” the sports club makes clear.
Anyone who is caught smoking will receive a yellow or even red warning from stewards who are supposed to pay attention and be made aware of it.

For the time being, the club said nothing about a yellow suspension for fans who, like midfield engine Nicolas Höfler (33/61 warnings in 235 Bundesliga games), like to collect cards. However, the sports club makes it clear to its fans: “Please be considerate of non-smokers, use the areas in the stadium that are approved for smoking, especially in circulation – and do not get a ticket.”
Background: At SC home games, smoking has long been banned in all standing and seated areas and is only permitted in the circulation areas. However, because this was not consistently adhered to, Freiburg is now introducing the smoke traffic light card.
