Rugby World Cup: lack of evidence, World Rugby clears Mbonambi of accusations of racism

The incident between Bongi Mbonambi and Tom Curry is closed. While the first had been accused by the second of having used discriminatory terms during the semi-final of the World Cup between South Africa and England (16-15), World Rugby announced this Thursday morning close the case. The Englishman had claimed that the South African forward had called him a “white cunt”, a racial insult that could be translated as “white bitch”. In a video clip, it appeared that Mbonambi may have said “wyd kant” or “wit kant”, terms from Afrikaans, which are more playing instructions.

“After reviewing all available evidence, including match footage, audio recordings and testimonies from both teams, the governing body has determined that there is insufficient evidence at this time to charge prosecutions, wrote the world body in a press release. Therefore, the case is considered closed unless additional evidence is discovered. »

World Rugby, however, did not question Tom Curry’s words and wanted to show its disapproval of the insults to which the two men were victims after the fact. “World Rugby further acknowledges that Tom Curry made the allegations in good faith and that there is no suggestion that these allegations are deliberately false or malicious,” the statement said. World Rugby is also concerned by the hateful comments the two players received this week on social media. There is no place in rugby or society for discrimination, insults or hate speech, and World Rugby urges supporters to embrace the sport’s values of respect, integrity and solidarity. »
