Ros Canter and Izilot DHI Claim Victory at Five-Star Eventing Competition in Pau

After a remarkable cross country Saturday, Ros Canter and the ten-year-old KWPN-bred stallion went Izilot DHI (by Zavall VDL) in the lead in the five-star eventing competition in Pau, France. They could afford a beam in the final jumping course, but that turned out not to be necessary. The British top rider rode clear to victory (-28.7). A phenomenal end to an excellent season for Canter.

“He’s a great horse,” Canter said afterwards. “I think one of the best horses in the world.” Canter has been riding ‘Isaac’ – as the horse is called at home – since he was five. “We didn’t come here thinking we could win at all,” she says. “This is his first five-star and he can be quite curious, you also saw that when jumping. Six months ago this would have been too much for him and I am extremely proud of him.” She says that training the horse to this level has been a real team effort. Izilot belongs to Canter itself, in shared ownership with Alex Moody.

Top year

Pau is the end of the eventing season. For Ros Canter, 2023 is a year not to be forgotten. She won the soaking wet five-star in Badminton with Lordships Graffalo and won gold at the European Championships with the same horse in September.

Townend and McEwen

The entire top six were British. Oliver Townend came second with Tregilder (by Royal Concorde), after a flawless jumping round. “I’m so proud of this horse,” Townend said afterwards. He has been riding Tregilder, who measures 1.80 m, since he was four. Tom McEwen had a bar in the final jumping course and dropped from second to third place. He was in the saddle of JL Dublin (by Diarado). No Dutch combinations rode in Pau.
