Relief and Optimism as Soudal-Quick Step Survival Ensured: Riders React to the News

“A lot has fallen on everyone’s shoulders after yesterday,” said a visibly relieved Ilan Van Wilder before the start of the 117th Tour of Lombardy. “This is the best for the entire racing world. This news takes away a lot of stress.”

Has anything changed within the Wolfpack? “No, there were no cracks in the group of riders. Everything was played above our heads and we couldn’t necessarily do anything about it. We are only employees and did not let it get into the group.”

“There was talk about it in Italy, but it was always about things we don’t know. Now there has been real communication from the team and that took away a lot of stress.”

To say that Van Wilder was not a fan of a possible merger between Soudal – Quick Step and Team Jumbo – Visma is an understatement. “We don’t agree with all the ‘shit’, we want the team to survive,” he said after his impressive victory in the Tre VAlli Varesine (1.pro) earlier this week.

“I hope that my statements have somewhat counteracted the merger, that was the intention,” said Van Wilder. “This team is very close to my heart. Quick Step picked me up when I was at my worst and I have made a lot of progress here. I also really enjoy racing in this team.”

“Hence my response earlier this week. I am someone who speaks with his heart. People can think and make what they want, but I am not someone who will answer like a robot. I tell it like it is, in a respectful manner. That is my right.”

Teammate Mauri Vansevenant also appeared relieved in front of the Sporza microphone. “We did not really realize what had happened in recent weeks, but I am happy that we have already received more positive news. Mentally it is certainly better.”

“Everyone was busy with it and that created an unpleasant atmosphere. Uncertainty is never good and it is good for everyone, the sport, the sponsors, riders, the framework that Soudal-Quick Step continues to exist.”

Nothing has broken between management and rider group? “That remains to be seen,” says Vansevenant. “It was a very hectic week and we didn’t have much time to think about it. Only time will tell. But I think everything can work out.”

“For me personally, nothing has changed. I am professional enough and know what my job is.”
